Ownership is binary

It is quite interesting when a set of people owning “something” assume that each person only has to do ‘blah’ since that is what their own. How wrong is this thinking? This is natural when working on a project / release in a large company since everyone gets paid no whatever what.

Unfortunately, this does not work well in the real world, I mean in a broad sense outside of professional work. Ownership is binary – you own something or you dont. Owning means going all the way no matter what to make something successful. When you have co-ownership it is not 50% ownership, it means multiple people each having 100% ownership in my opinion. Is that not why we say ‘sum of the parts is greater than the whole’.

Even in a small startup, each person can do any role and should be willing to do any role. The reason people are hired is not because someone is filling a hole / area that no one knows about or no one can do. it is simply because 1 or 2 ppl do not have the resources [time primarily], so bringing someone as a BOL makes them the owner from a process perspective to take that task to completion. but everyone in the startup from a mindset perspective should have the same ownership.

Another example, when buying properties with a friend or relative, it may be called ‘co-ownership’ but it is actually 2 “full” owners for 1 property. Which technically means that both of them will work that much harder for the property to return 200%.

So friends, whatever be a task, small or big take complete ownership – it provides a better feeling on fruition. In Tamil they say – “vachcha kudumi saracha mottai’ :) :)
